Union Island ist die südlichste Insel des Karibikstaats St. Vincent und die Grenadinen und gehört zu den Grenadinen. Der Hauptort heißt Clifton Harbour. Die Insel hat einen internationalen Flughafen, einen ganz winzigen allerdings, von dem Saint Vincent, einige der Grenadinen sowie Barbados, Carriacou, Grenada und Martinique angeflogen wird.

Union Island is the southernmost island of the Grenadines and belongs to the state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Main town is Clifton Harbour. The island has an international airport which has domestic flights to Saint Vincent and some of the Grenadines and international flights to Barbados, Carriacou, Grenada and Martinique.

 

Aufgrund ihrer vulkanischen Silhouette nennt man Union Island auch Tahiti of the West Indies. Die Insel ist 4.5km lang und 1.5km breit. Der höchste Berg ist der Mount Parnassus mit 275m Seehöhe.

Hill" sits between Ashton and Mt. Taboi and is much smaller.

Auf die Ureinwohner, Arawak and Kariben, folgte die französische und englische Kolonialisation. Die Europäer brachten hunderte Afrikaner auf die Insel, hauptsächlich aus Kamerun und Angola. Nach Abschaffung der Sklaverei lebten die Schwarzen von Landwirtschaft und Fischerei.
Yachtcharter schafft heute einen Großteil der Arbeitsplätze, es gibt zahlreiche Boutiquen und Supermärkte, Bars und Restaurants, Internet Cafes sowie eine Tauchschule.

After the original settlers, Arawak and Caribs, the Island has been in the possession of French and English slave traders and plantation owners. They brought hundreds of Africans to the island, mostly from Cameroon and Angola. When slavery was abolished, people still relied on farming and fishing. As a result, a lot of men went to sea to work on freighters to support their families.
Today the day chartering business provides a lot of jobs, there are numerous boutiques and supermarkets, bars and restaurants, internet cafes and a dive operator.
